    A Software Based Smart Grid Framework for Automated Decision on Resource Allocation, Topological Control using OMNET++

    The futuristic smart grid require creative architectures for Information and Communication technologies (ICT) networks. One such architecture must need some sort of topological control for the next generation grid. To assess architectural impact and effectiveness, simulation models are important. Communication networks are expected to be tightly coupled-integrated element for smart grid systems. The co-existence of communication and control and their joint operation necessitate accurate modeling of communication events. While at the first glance, it is tempting to model the communication network as a black box that introduces delay/s between its input and output, the complex interactions among grid network and its components and between data sources and the network make it less tractable. The paper focuses a software-based smart grid architecture modeling using an OMNET++, a discrete event simulator. It consists of layers of independent management modules for communication, and control events that represent realworld cases using generators, circuit breakers, switches or relays, transmission lines and loads. A topology sorting algorithm is presented using modified Dijkstra‟s Algorithm, and several contingency scenarios for an IEEE 14 bus system was carried out emulating real electric test-bed conditions

    Aircraft Communication Systems - Topologies, Protocols, and Vulnerabilities

    Aviation systems are facing fierce competition driven by private investments promoting the development of new avionics suites (AS). With these new AS comes the need for a faster and larger bandwidth requirement for next generation communication systems. The legacy military (MIL) standard 1553 communication system (e.g., 1Mbps) can no longer keep up with the surge in bandwidth demand requirements. The new communication systems need to be designed with a system architecture background that can enable simplistic integration with Information Technology (IT) controlled groundnetworks, military, and commercial payloads. To facilitate a seamless integration with communication architecture, the current system is highly dependent on the Ethernet based IEEE 802.3 standard. Using a standard protocol cuts down on cost and shortens time for accessibility. However, it introduces several other new problems that developers are actively working through. These problems include a loss of redundancy, lower reliability, and cyber-security vulnerabilities. The cyber-security vulnerabilities that are introduced by IEEE 802.3 Ethernet are one of the larger concerns to military defense programs, and other aviation companies. Impacts of these new communication protocols are quantified and presented as cost, redundancy, topology, and vulnerability. This review paper introduces four communication protocols that can replace heritage systems. These protocols are presented and compared against each other in redundancy, reliability, topology and security vulnerabilities in their application on aircraft, space launch vehicles and satellites

    Expression of the ARPC4 subunit of human Arp2/3 severely affects mycobacterium tuberculosis growth and suppresses immunogenic response in murine macrophages

    Background: The search for molecules against Mycobacterium tuberculosis is urgent. The mechanisms facilitating the intra-macrophage survival of Mycobacterium tuberculosis are as yet not entirely understood. However, there is evidence showing the involvement of host cell cytoskeleton in every step of establishment and persistence of mycobacterial infection. Methodology/Principal Findings: Here we show that expression of ARPC4, a subunit of the Actin related protein 2/3 (Arp2/3) protein complex, severely affects the pathogen’s growth. TEM studies display shedding of the mycobacterial outer-coat. Furthermore, in infected macrophages, mycobacteria expressing ARPC4 were cleared off at a much faster rate, and were unable to mount a pro-inflammatory cytokine response. The translocation of ARPC4-expressing mycobacteria to the lysosome of the infected macrophage was also impaired. Additionally, the ARPC4 subunit was shown to interact with Rv1626, an essential secretory mycobacterial protein. Real-time PCR analysis showed that upon expression of ARPC4 in mycobacteria, Rv1626 expression is downregulated as much as six-fold. Rv1626 was found to also interact with mammalian cytoskeleton protein, Arp2/3, and enhance the rate of actin polymerization. Conclusions/Significance: With crystal structures for Rv1626 and ARPC4 subunit already known, our finding lays out the effect of a novel molecule on mycobacteria, and represents a viable starting point for developing potent peptidomimetics

    A peptide fragment from the human COX3 protein disrupts association of Mycobacterium tuberculosisvirulence proteins ESAT-6 and CFP10, inhibits mycobacterial growth and mounts protective immune response

    BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the most prevalent infectious diseases affecting millions worldwide. The currently available anti-TB drugs and vaccines have proved insufficient to contain this scourge, necessitating an urgent need for identification of novel drug targets and therapeutic strategies. The disruption of crucial protein-protein interactions, especially those that are responsible for virulence in Mycobacterium tuberculosis – for example the ESAT-6:CFP10 complex – are a worthy pursuit in this direction. METHODS: We therefore sought to improvise a method to attenuate M. tuberculosis while retaining the latter’s antigenic properties. We screened peptide libraries for potent ESAT-6 binders capable of dissociating CFP10 from ESAT-6. We assessed the disruption by a peptide named HCL2, of the ESAT-6:CFP10 complex and studied its effects on mycobacterial survival and virulence. RESULTS: We found that HCL2, derived from the human cytochrome c oxidase subunit 3 (COX3) protein, disrupts ESAT-6:CFP10 complex, binds ESAT-6 potently, disintegrates bacterial cell wall and inhibits extracellular as well as intracellular mycobacterial growth. In addition, an HCL2 expressing M. tuberculosis strain induces both Th1 and Th17 host protective responses. CONCLUSIONS: Disruption of ESAT-6:CFP10 association could, therefore, be an alternate method for attenuating M. tuberculosis, and a possible route towards future vaccine generation

    Global injury morbidity and mortality from 1990 to 2017 : results from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017

    Correction:Background Past research in population health trends has shown that injuries form a substantial burden of population health loss. Regular updates to injury burden assessments are critical. We report Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2017 Study estimates on morbidity and mortality for all injuries. Methods We reviewed results for injuries from the GBD 2017 study. GBD 2017 measured injury-specific mortality and years of life lost (YLLs) using the Cause of Death Ensemble model. To measure non-fatal injuries, GBD 2017 modelled injury-specific incidence and converted this to prevalence and years lived with disability (YLDs). YLLs and YLDs were summed to calculate disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Findings In 1990, there were 4 260 493 (4 085 700 to 4 396 138) injury deaths, which increased to 4 484 722 (4 332 010 to 4 585 554) deaths in 2017, while age-standardised mortality decreased from 1079 (1073 to 1086) to 738 (730 to 745) per 100 000. In 1990, there were 354 064 302 (95% uncertainty interval: 338 174 876 to 371 610 802) new cases of injury globally, which increased to 520 710 288 (493 430 247 to 547 988 635) new cases in 2017. During this time, age-standardised incidence decreased non-significantly from 6824 (6534 to 7147) to 6763 (6412 to 7118) per 100 000. Between 1990 and 2017, age-standardised DALYs decreased from 4947 (4655 to 5233) per 100 000 to 3267 (3058 to 3505). Interpretation Injuries are an important cause of health loss globally, though mortality has declined between 1990 and 2017. Future research in injury burden should focus on prevention in high-burden populations, improving data collection and ensuring access to medical care.Peer reviewe

    Measuring the health-related Sustainable Development Goals in 188 countries : a baseline analysis from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2015

    Background In September, 2015, the UN General Assembly established the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs specify 17 universal goals, 169 targets, and 230 indicators leading up to 2030. We provide an analysis of 33 health-related SDG indicators based on the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2015 (GBD 2015). Methods We applied statistical methods to systematically compiled data to estimate the performance of 33 health-related SDG indicators for 188 countries from 1990 to 2015. We rescaled each indicator on a scale from 0 (worst observed value between 1990 and 2015) to 100 (best observed). Indices representing all 33 health-related SDG indicators (health-related SDG index), health-related SDG indicators included in the Millennium Development Goals (MDG index), and health-related indicators not included in the MDGs (non-MDG index) were computed as the geometric mean of the rescaled indicators by SDG target. We used spline regressions to examine the relations between the Socio-demographic Index (SDI, a summary measure based on average income per person, educational attainment, and total fertility rate) and each of the health-related SDG indicators and indices. Findings In 2015, the median health-related SDG index was 59.3 (95% uncertainty interval 56.8-61.8) and varied widely by country, ranging from 85.5 (84.2-86.5) in Iceland to 20.4 (15.4-24.9) in Central African Republic. SDI was a good predictor of the health-related SDG index (r(2) = 0.88) and the MDG index (r(2) = 0.2), whereas the non-MDG index had a weaker relation with SDI (r(2) = 0.79). Between 2000 and 2015, the health-related SDG index improved by a median of 7.9 (IQR 5.0-10.4), and gains on the MDG index (a median change of 10.0 [6.7-13.1]) exceeded that of the non-MDG index (a median change of 5.5 [2.1-8.9]). Since 2000, pronounced progress occurred for indicators such as met need with modern contraception, under-5 mortality, and neonatal mortality, as well as the indicator for universal health coverage tracer interventions. Moderate improvements were found for indicators such as HIV and tuberculosis incidence, minimal changes for hepatitis B incidence took place, and childhood overweight considerably worsened. Interpretation GBD provides an independent, comparable avenue for monitoring progress towards the health-related SDGs. Our analysis not only highlights the importance of income, education, and fertility as drivers of health improvement but also emphasises that investments in these areas alone will not be sufficient. Although considerable progress on the health-related MDG indicators has been made, these gains will need to be sustained and, in many cases, accelerated to achieve the ambitious SDG targets. The minimal improvement in or worsening of health-related indicators beyond the MDGs highlight the need for additional resources to effectively address the expanded scope of the health-related SDGs.Peer reviewe

    A Distributed Linear Programming Model in a Smart Grid

    Advances in computing and communication have resulted in large-scale distributed environments in recent years. They are capable of storing large volumes of data and, often, have multiple compute nodes. However, the inherent heterogeneity of data components, the dynamic nature of distributed systems, the need for information synchronization and data fusion over a network, and security and access-control issues makes the problem of resource management and monitoring a tremendous challenge in the context of a Smart grid. Unfortunately, the concept of cloud computing and the deployment of distributed algorithms have been overlooked in the electric grid sector. In particular, centralized methods for managing resources and data may not be sufficient to monitor a complex electric grid. Most of the electric grid management that includes generation, transmission, and distribution is, by and large, managed at a centralized control. In this dissertation, I present a distributed algorithm for resource management which builds on the traditional simplex algorithm used for solving large-scale linear optimization problems. The distributed algorithm is exact, meaning its results are identical if run in a centralized setting. More specifically in this dissertation, I discuss a distributed decision model, where a large-scale electric grid is decomposed into many sub models that can support the resource assignment, communication, computation, and control functions necessary to provide robustness and to prevent incidents such as cascading blackouts. The key contribution of this dissertation is to design, develop, and test a resource-allocation process through a decomposition principle in a Smart grid. I have implemented and tested the Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition process in standard IEEE 14-bus and 30-bus systems. The dissertation provides details about how to formulate, implement, and test such an LP-based design to study the dynamic behavior and impact of an electrical network while considering its failure and repair rates. The computational benefits of the Dantzig-Wolfe approach to find an optimal solution and its applicability to IEEE bus systems are presented
